In Texas, a licensed psychologist typically charges around $150 to $250 for a standard 60-minute session, with higher rates in Austin, Dallas, and Houston than in smaller markets. Master’s-level therapists usually charge less. Those who offer specific specialties such as eating disorder specialists or couples and marriage therapy can often cost more. As a point of reference, my rates are $165 for a 60-minute session and $225 for a 90-minute session. I also accept many insurances.

What you actually pay depends on insurance more than on the sticker price. If your psychologist or masters’ level therapist is in network, you owe a copay or coinsurance, often $15 to $50 or even 0$ in some rare cases, often once your deductible is met. If they’re out of network, you pay the full rate and submit a superbill for possible reimbursement. Before you assume a practice is out of reach, call your insurer and ask two things: what your outpatient mental health copay is, and what your out-of-network reimbursement rate is. The second number surprises people more often than the first.
