Psychologist vs Therapist: Which Should You See?

Is it better to see a psychologist or a therapist?

Psychologist vs Therapist, neither is better across the board. “Therapist” is a general word covering several licenses, including counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists, most of whom hold master’s degrees. “Psychologist” is a protected title requiring a doctorate, a supervised internship, and passing a licensing exam. The doctoral training puts more weight on research and assessment, which matters when your situation is complicated or an earlier round of therapy didn’t help. For a lot of what brings people in, a well-trained clinician at either level can do excellent work, and fit with the person matters more than the letters after their name. Where the doctorate tends to stand out is with layered presentations: chronic pain alongside depression, trauma that keeps resurfacing, or a diagnosis nobody has been able to pin down. If you’re unsure, ask about their training with your specific concern.

Another question you may be asking is do i even need to consider seeing a therapist? I have an article that goes over some thoughts on the topic.
