FAQ

What is therapy like?

In general, therapy is a unique experience for every individual. However, you can expect our sessions to be 50 minutes. We will focus on your most pressing concerns while ensuring you are progressing towards your overall goal. My role is to guide our conversations to help you make the changes that are most important to you.

What purpose does therapy serve?

The purpose of therapy is to help promote change and implement healthy life style practices. Therapy helps to uncover difficult emotions, better understand internal experiences, and learn new ways to cope with life’s challenges. When attended consistently, I can help you better manage difficult moods, improve relationships and communication, heal past traumas and stressful life events, navigate multicultural issues, make important behavioral changes, and find ways to live a life that is true to you and your values.

Does therapy have any side effects?

Therapy has many benefits to helping change behavior, our experience with emotion and thoughts, and improve relationships. However, like treatments of any kind, there may be moments in which you feel discomfort. This might include feelings of depression, anger, or anxiety. Often these are a result of difficult experiences you may not have had the opportunity to process- in other words, it is normal. The discomfort is often temporary and subsides with consistent engagement in sessions. My role is to help guide you through these moments and develop healthy coping.

How do we get started?

I recommend starting with a brief 20 minute phone consultation (free to you) so I can learn a little about you including your current concerns. The phone consultation is also a great time to ask any questions you may have for me. At that time you will receive information on how to sign up for the client portal where you can upload documents, make payments, and get billing information. Our first two sessions are used to gather more detail about your concerns and goals and to see if this is a good fit. We then move forward by arranging regularly scheduled appointments.

What is your fee?

My fee for 50 minute individual therapy sessions is $165.

If you decide one of the more structured 90 minutes treatments is a good fit for you- the fee for these are $180.

Do you take insurance?

I am considered an out-of-network provider. However, depending on your specific insurance plan, it is possible for services to be covered in part or in full. For these, I can provide a monthly bill that you can use to get reimbursed for services. Below are suggestions of questions you may want to ask your insurance provider:

  • Do I have out-of-network mental health insurance benefits?
  • Are telehealth visits covered?
  • What is my deductible and has it been met?
  • What is my co-insurance?
  • How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?
  • What is the coverage amount per session?
  • Is approval required from my primary care physician?

What are the benefits of paying out of pocket?

Insurance companies often mandate a diagnosis or require treatment to be “medically necessary” to be covered. This can result in issues with ethics and integrity of practice. Paying out of pocket can ensure you are not being diagnosed inappropriately for the sake of insurance. Additionally, insurance providers can oversee your health records and may require access to your information while in therapy, limiting your confidentiality. They may also limit the number of sessions you can access each year and/or allow only a narrow option of treatment modalities. For some paying out of pocket is a better fit. Please feel free to call me to discuss any questions.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel an appointment please do so 24 hours before the session. Otherwise you may be charged the full amount.
