Depression
The world seems to stop
Experiencing depression can feel debilitating. Your world seems to stop even though on the inside you really don’t want it to. You try so hard to make changes, to do something, but it feels as if each molecule in you just can’t do it. Nearly a third of the global population struggles with depression. What this means is you are not alone. And thankfully, there are many researched-backed approaches to help guide you out.
It’s just too much
While depression is unique to each individual, there are some commonalities. Do any of these sound familiar to you? You feel down or depressed much of the day or most days. You struggle feeling worthwhile in your life. Hopefulness, some days, feels like a faint light you used to know. Things that brought you joy and excitement- you don’t know what the feels like anymore. Your sleep is thrown off along with your energy, health, and relationships with family and friends. You notice procrastinating at work or having trouble keeping up with life’s daily demands. You might even have feelings of shame or guilt. It all just feels too much.
Confusion- how did I get here?
It can feel very confusing to understand why you might be feeling the way you are. I know it doesn’t solve everything, but it’s important to understand that depression is a response to a stressful event. It is your brain and nervous system’s way of attempting to protect itself. Think of a wild animal that freezes when trying to hide from a threat. Depression is the human version of that. You might have experienced a family or work stress that has been prolonged and stretched out. Or maybe you’re going through a difficult life transition. You’re a new parent trying to find balance. Or adjusting to a new job and location. Perhaps you’ve lost an important person in your life and are grieving. You may even be trying to manage a chemical imbalance from the result of genetic factors, medical diagnoses, or substance use.
