Health Diagnosis Management

Receiving a health diagnosis can feel like a significant turning point in your life. It bursts through unexpectedly, throwing chaos at the plans you created and looked forward to. Whether your diagnosis is new or not, it can’t be denied there are a flood of emotions, worries, questions, and thoughts that come along with it.

Loss of Control & Grief

There is a sense of having little to no control over your body that feels terrifying. You didn’t ask for this and it feels unfair. Managing a new or old chronic illness means wanting to engage more fully in your life, but your body not cooperating all the time. There’s anger and frustration coupled with sadness and grief on those days. You feel as though you have to push past your limits to get the daily tasks done. Maybe you’ve even tried a variety of things to support your health but feel like you’re hitting a wall.

Pushing Through the Exhaustion

With all this in tow, you still have to go to doctor’s appointments, tests, scans, treatments over and over again. Not to mention the difficult lifestyle changes you’ve needed to make. But it feels like life must go on even if you’re in pain or completely exhausted. Maybe you even find yourself having to keep your emotions “in check” to support your family and friends as they also navigate these life changes with you. Other times, you notice deeper feelings and memories you’ve held onto for a long time resurface and add to the chaos.

If this sounds like you, I hear you. And I am here to help. I will sit with you and help you navigate the rough emotional waters of having a medical diagnosis.

My approach will help you:

  • Learn to relate to your emotional experiences in new and healthier ways- ways that allow you to continue living a valuable and meaningful life while honoring your unique emotional and physical health journey.
  • Reconnect with your body when and where it feels safe. The body stores emotional experiences and by tapping into it, you can learn more about your body and mind.
  • Develop methods to implement any health or lifestyle changes you may want to make. We’ll work to identify barriers and get creative on ways to make it happen in your life.
  • Advocate for yourself in medical settings so that you show up to your appointments with healthy boundaries and strong confidence.
  • Restore relationships in your life that may have become strained or changed over time. You’ll learn to build boundaries as necessary, improve communication, and regain the sense of closeness and connection you’ve been looking for.
  • Gently unravel medical traumas that have been keeping you stuck- so that you can live your life without fear.

As your therapist, I will walk with you as you create a deep and meaningful life for yourself. Our sessions will include empathy from my own lived experiences of managing health conditions, creativity, and a dose of challenge when needed.
